  • NASA Announces Boeing and Space Crews

NASA's Commercial Crew Program is partnering with Boeing and SpaceX to launch humans on US -built spaceships from Kennedy Space Center on test flights to the space station.

Both Boeing's and SpaceX's crew pods were originally scheduled to launch on their first missions at the end of this year, blasting off into space atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket and a Falcon 9 rocket, respectively.

NASA-released renderings of SpaceX's Crew Dragon and Boeing's CST-100 Starliner spacecraft.

However, as the Inquisitr reported earlier today, Boeing has just announced it will be delaying the entire launch schedule of its Starliner spacecrafts, aiming for a first crewed test flight in mid-2019.

The agency released the revised schedule with little fanfare ahead of a planned August 3 announcement at the Johnson Space Center of the astronauts that will fly the two companies' crewed demonstration missions, as well as on the first post-certification, or operational, missions by each company.

Starliner's launch abort system, created to eject the crew pod a safe distance from the rocket in case of an emergency, relies on four engines developed by Aerojet Rocketdyne.

All the astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) have been taken there on Russian Soyuz spacecraft since the retirement of the American shuttle in 2011.

The reproduction of the story/photograph in any form will be liable for legal action. He will make the announcement at NASA's Johnson Space Center Friday morning.

SpaceX said it would fly crews by April.

Crew Dragon is also outfitted with an emergency escape system, which consists of eight SuperDraco engines built into the capsule's walls.

After successful completion of the flight tests with crew, NASA will review flight data to verify the systems meet the agency's safety and performance certification requirements and are ready to begin regular servicing missions to the space station.

The last scheduled flight for a US astronaut on the Russian Soyuz craft is November 2019. Sometimes called the "Commercial Crew Cadre", those astronauts are seasoned veterans who've worked closely with Boeing and SpaceX on their new spacecraft and systems over the past three years.

In March, SpaceX performed two parachute tests, the company's 14th and 15th overall parachute test supporting Crew Dragon development in the Mojave Desert in Southern California.

Boeing has since identified the problem he said, and is working to fix it.

Meanwhile, SpaceX seems to be carrying on as planned, since there has been no news as of this writing that the company might also push back the first manned mission of its Crew Dragon.

Mulholland added that he has no "visibility into SpaceX progress or the fidelity of the SpaceX schedule", and that they only focus on making "sure we do everything we can to ensure a safe vehicle and meeting the schedule parameters that I've laid out".
