The process of updating NRC in Assam differs from the rest of the country and is governed by Rule 4A and the corresponding Schedule of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and issue of national identity cards) Rules, 2003.

The BJP state president Dilip Ghosh condemned politicians for shedding "shedding crocodile tears" over the release of the NRC list in Assam, which is the first state of the nation to have such a list, and said that such a list would be implemented in West Bengal as well.

Banerjee, who is also the Trinamool Congress chief, said the Centre can come up with a bill to protect the people who are staying in Assam for such a long time.

The central government said that people who are not part of the NRC final draft would not be automatically declared foreigners.

The first draft of the ongoing NRC process was released on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, wherein the names of 1.9 crore of the 3.29 crore applicants were incorporated.

The list featured over 2.89 crore names out of almost 3.29 crore applicants in Assam.

"We are genuine Indian citizens, and maybe there were some technical problems", he said. The Bhuyans had urged Sharma to take an imitative to remove the names of over illegal migrants from the 2006 electoral rolls of Assam.

Elsewhere in the country's northern heartland, lynchings of Muslim cattle traders have risen under Modi in the country where many Hindus consider cows sacred, further deepening social divides.

Trump again seemed to preview release of good economic news
THE FACTS: Economists do expect a strong number for growth in the April-June quarter, but it is likely to be a temporary bounce. He said the GDP numbers also underscored the urgent need for the job-training programs that the administration is pushing.

"If the government has made a decision to brand us foreigners what can we do?" said Abdul Suban, 60, a Bengali-speaking Muslim, earlier.

The Assam controversy comes as the government looks at amending the citizenship law to allow certain "persecuted minorities", including Hindus and Christians from neighbouring countries, to obtain legal status after six years of residency in India. The CM also extended heartiest congratulations to the 55,000 officials engaged in NRC updation process and the people living across the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys, plains and hills of the State. They can not be termed as non-citizens.

“Already, the Union Home Minister has categorically stated that no one would be sent to the detention camps even if their names do not appear in NRC, ” he reiterated.

Hajela said that most of Assam's 126,000 so-called doubtful voters, and an estimated 150,000 of their descendants, would be excluded from the NRC in accordance with a court order.

Ahead of the publication of the NRC draft list, the government had deployed thousands of security personnel to avoid any backlash from immigrants.

"Some people are unnecessarily trying to create an atmosphere of fear". He has assured me that the government will not harass people.

It added that a local registrar has to give notice to those who have filed claims and objections, and give them reasonable opportunity for hearing.

Reuters notes, "Critics see the citizenship test as another measure supported by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at minority Muslims".
