Concerns Of Dam Failure Prompt Evacuations In Lynchburg, Va.

  • Dozens of households have been told to evacuate

More than 150 people had been removed from the possible path of dam waters, Luann Hunt, a spokesperson for the city of Lynchburg, told ABC News.

Authorities near Lynchburg in the usa state of Virginia sought to evacuate more than 100 people after weather forecasters warned that heavy rainfall could cause a dam to fail and flood the city.

Late last night, county officials reported that the dam was in danger of "imminent failure," as local first responders shuttled boats into floodwaters to rescue citizens and take them to shelters.

But by early afternoon Friday, officials said the dam was stable, and were considering opening a sluice gate at the dam to help reduce the water in the lake, according to a statement from Lynchburg Water Resources.

Rain has saturated parts of the East for days, with flash-flood watches in effect for millions from Georgia to Vermont.

The Lynchburg Sheriff's Office says the E.C. Glass High School auditorium is available for any residents who are evacuating their homes.

He has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and it is understood manager Jose Mourinho is willing to sell the France forward.

It is unclear how many people were being evacuated.

The deluge of rain that affected much of Virginia on Thursday, causing road closures and power outages in the Shenandoah Valley, has prompted evacuations in Lynchburg, just below an overflowing dam.

Since 2014, the City Council has been considering options for repairing or replacing the dam.

But there was good news on Friday as engineers examined the dam and said it survived in good shape.

In Lynchburg, they are still a little bit anxious because there is rain in the forecast that the water will add to the water in the reservoir and put pressure on this dam. Liberty University, the Christian university founded by Jerry Falwell, is also located in Lynchburg. If you are in low lying areas below the College Lake Dam, you should move to higher ground immediately. The area impacted would be the city of Lynchburg, which is one mile downstream from the dam.
