  • US ‘addiction to sanctions knows no bounds’ – Iranian foreign minister

While Turkish FM Mevlut Cavusoglu had agreed to resolve the situation in a meeting with Pompeo, he also says that the threatening language and sanctions from the United States won't get them anywhere.

Their meeting in Singapore followed Washington's imposition on Wednesday of sanctions on two Turkish ministers over the case of Andrew Brunson, a USA pastor on trial in Turkey for backing terrorism.

On Friday, the two leaders agreed to work together to resolve tensions between the two countries.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for the release of American pastor Andrew Brunson Friday, just before meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Singapore.

"Of course you can't expect all issues to be resolved in a single meeting".

This comes after the USA slapped sanctions on Turkish government officials earlier this week for their role in his capture. He says Turkey is now "on notice".

"I hope they'll see this for what it is: a demonstration that we're very serious", he said.

The official went on to say he and Pompeo also discussed steps to strengthen ties between the two countries despite the new sanctions from the U.S.

"Brunson needs to come home".

The United States has also been seeking the release of three locally employed embassy staff detained in Turkey.

Brunson, whose trial began in the spring, faces up to 35 years in jail if convicted.

U.S. pastor Andrew Brunson has been accused by Turkey of having ties to the movement of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Erdogan blames for a failed coup in 2016.

The American pastor was also charged with supporting outlawed Kurdish PKK fighters.

Turkey has been trying to have Gulen extradited from the United States for two years.

The sanctions have led to a sell-off in the Turkish currency, reflecting deepening investor concern over the worsening relations with a major trading partner. He was recently moved from prison to house arrest.

The case has been followed closely by America's evangelical Christian community, a key part of President Trump's support base.

Erdogan said within the scope of action plan, the environmental impact assessment and survey project works of Canal Istanbul will be submitted for approval.
