"One can ascertain that the aircraft hit the ground almost vertically at high speed", Daniel Knecht, who heads the aviation division of the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board, said.

Police said that all 20 people on board the plane, including its three crew members, died.

It crashed about 2,540m (8,333 ft) above sea level, on the western side of a 3,000m peak called Piz Segnas. Most of the people killed were from Switzerland, along with an Austrian couple and their son.

It was the first time the airline had experienced an accident that resulted in death or injury to passengers or crew members, Waldmeier said.

He and senior police official Andreas Tobler said the vintage plane lacked "black boxes", the crash-resistant cockpit voice and data recorders that more modern aircraft have.
