He blamed the Venezuelan political far right in collaboration with the Colombian far right, and the current Colombian President Santos of being behind the assassination attack.

"There will be no forgiveness", Maduro warned, for what a military statement said was an act of "barbarism in a desperate attempt to destabilize" the government.

The statements were made during an encounter with the diplomatic corps accredited in the country to explain the assassination attempt against the president.

Venezuelan activists in Miami expressed concern on Sunday that an alleged drone attack on Venezuela's leader could be used by the Maduro government to embark on a new wave of repression against opposition groups in the country.

"We are convinced that settling political differences must be carried out exclusively in a peaceful and democratic way", the foreign ministry said.

He said one drone flew over the tribune where Maduro was giving a speech but that it became "disoriented by signal-inhibiting equipment" and was thus "activated outside the assassins' planned perimeter".

Just over a year ago, Maduro claimed a police helicopter had fired grenades at the Supreme Court in a "terror attack" that caused no injuries or damage and was dismissed by the opposition.

Nearby residents told The Associated Press that they saw a drone crash into a building and explode blocks from where Maduro was speaking in Caracas.

Maduro often accuses the opposition and the United States of working together to topple him.

The incident was later claimed by a group calling itself the "National Movement of Soldiers in Shirts".

"I heard the first explosion, it was so strong that the buildings moved", said Mairum Gonzalez, 45, a pre-school teacher. "Seconds later there was a second explosion".

He described it as "a crime of terrorism and assassination" and said that the "material and intellectual authors inside and outside the country" had been identified.

"I can say unequivocally there was no USA government involvement in this, at all", Bolton told Fox News.

While denying any USA role, he said that if Venezuela had "hard information" of a potential violation of U.S. law, "we will take a serious look at it".

In the midst of near-daily protests previous year, a rogue police officer flew a stolen helicopter over the capital and launched grenades at several government buildings.

"Venezuela will continue on the democratic, independent and socialist path", he said. Oscar Perez and several comrades were later killed in a gun battle after over six months at large. He expects the incident to prompt a purge of disloyal officials by the regime, as well as further restrictions on Venezuelans' civil liberties.

Images on social media showed officers surrounding Maduro with what appeared to be a black bulletproof shields as they escorted him from the site.

"That drone was coming for me but there was a shield of love".
