Trump warns countries against doing business with Iran

  • Bolton European countries could be sanctioned

Earlier in the day he assailed Iran as "a murderous dictatorship that has continued to spread bloodshed, violence and chaos".

So-called snapback sanctions, due to come into force early on Tuesday, target Iranian purchases of USA dollars, metals trading, coal, industrial software and its auto sector.

The United States also plans to re-introduce potentially more damaging sanctions on Iranian oil in November.

The US sees the sanctions "as a tool to pressure Iran to come back to the negotiating table to rehash the nuclear deal on terms more to Trump's liking".

"The Iranian economy will undoubtedly shrink but if past is prologue, Iran is not going to change its regional policies even if it falls into a recession", he said. He said Iran has used "the windfall of newly accessible funds" it received "to build nuclear-capable missiles, fund terrorism, and fuel conflict across the Middle East and beyond".

"If you´re an enemy and you stab the other person with a knife, and then you say you want negotiations, then the first thing you have to do is remove the knife", the Iranian leader said in an interview on state television.

"Talk to anyone, anywhere in the world and they will tell you that (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu, (US President Donald) Trump and (Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed) bin Salman are isolated, not Iran", he said.

That was a reference, widely heard in Iran these days, to the famous phrase used by Iran's revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeini who said signing a truce to end the brutal eight-year war with Iraq in 1988 was like drinking "a cup of poison".

The first set of US sanctions against Iran that had been eased under the landmark nuclear accord have gone back into effect.

"There is a clear interest around the world", one staffer said.

Newshour, US hits Turkey with sanctions over jailed pastor
He says Turkey is now "on notice ". "I hope they'll see this for what it is: a demonstration that we're very serious", he said . The case has been followed closely by America's evangelical Christian community, a key part of President Trump's support base.

Iranian authorities recently also arrested 45 people, including the Central Bank's deputy chief, as part of a crackdown on financial fraud, according to judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi. He has accused Iran of supporting the Syrian government, Houthi rebels in Yemen, Hamas in Gaza and the Lebanese Hezbollah. Now, it's there. It's their modus operandi.

A European Commission spokeswoman on Monday (6 August) told reporters in Brussels that EU firms are banned from following United States demands to cut business ties with Iran, unless specifically authorised to do so. They presage tougher sanctions against imports of Iranian oil that will go into force in early November, although the administration signaled it will consider partial exemptions to that ban.

The measure is part of a broader European Commission response, known as the "blocking statute", that also allows the firms to recover damages arising from USA extra-territorial sanctions.

The European Union's diplomatic chief, Federica Mogherini, said the union, as well as Britain, France and Germany, deeply regretted the U.S. move.

They called the worldwide agreement "a key element of the global nuclear nonproliferation architecture, crucial for the security of Europe, the region and the entire world".

"We are determined to protect European economic operators engaged in legitimate business with Iran", the foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany and the European Union said in a joint statement on Monday. "Individuals or entities that fail to wind down activities with Iran risk severe consequences". Russian Federation and China also signed on to the 2015 deal.

"Preserving the nuclear deal with Iran is a matter of respecting global agreements and a matter of worldwide security".

The President described them as the most "biting" ever imposed and warned other nations against trading with Iran in violation of the sanction.
