UK PM May scolds Johnson for burqa remark after outcry

  • Boris Johnson Conservative burka

Johnson will face an inquiry after the Conservative party received a number of complaints over his comments comparing burqas to "letterboxes" and "bank robbers".

But Conor Burns MP, a vocal supporter of Mr Johnson, said it was "bizarre" for Commissioner Dick to use her position to look into the comments with rising crime in the Capital.

May was "perhaps relieved she no longer has to bite her tongue when asked about her erstwhile cabinet colleague", says The Times.

The former foreign secretary will be investigated over whether he has broken the party's code of conduct for comments that were widely criticised by figures, including from his own party, as Islamophobic.

"It is ridiculous that these views are being attacked - we must not fall into the trap of shutting down the debate on hard issues", a source close to Johnson told reporters.

The Conservative party code of practice sets out "minimum standards of behaviour." .

If the independent panel finds him culpable, Johnson faces suspension of his membership or expulsion from the party.

Khabib vs McGregor set for October 6
Conor McGregor is set to face Khabib Nurmagomedov on October 6 in Las Vegas in what could be the biggest fight in UFC history. Nurmagomedov took McGregor's 155lb title in April, with the Irishman stripped of it due to inactivity.

In his article, Johnson said he opposed a ban on face-covering veils, but added that it was "absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter-boxes".

A watchdog which advises former ministers on taking new jobs ruled that Johnson broke ministerial rules by taking up his weekly column at the Telegraph without consulting it first.

A poll yesterday showed that the majority of the public did not feel he should apologise - and in fact a majority supported a ban on the burka, something which Mr Johnson did not even advocate for. The person in the niqab "is similar to a Bank robber" or "Inbox".

Johnson refused to apologize for his remarks, calling the outrage at his remarks "ridiculous" as well as an attack on free speech.

A former journalist who has often been accused of courting media attention, Johnson was not available for comment.

As chairman of a party that seeks to represent the whole country, which protects individual liberty as a cherished British value, your call - we believe - is insufficient.

Johnson, who is now on holiday, has refused to apologize for his controversial descriptions despite calls to do so by the Tory party hierarchy.
