China lodged its challenge at the WTO on Tuesday, the statement said.

The solar duties are separate from tariff hikes imposed by the Trump administration starting in July on Chinese imports in response to complaints Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology.

Of course, tariffs have been a mainstay in Canadian headlines for the past several months, with Trump levying duties on US imports of Canadian steel and aluminum.

"[Competition will be] internal, like it used to be in the old days when we actually had steel, and U.S. Steel was our greatest company", Tump told The Journal.

Washington took action under the United States 1974 Act in place of the World Trade Organization.

Trump, in recent months, has frequently complained that other countries are treating the U.S.as a "piggy bank" and that the U.S.is being "robbed" by their trade policies.

China has tried to portray itself as a defender of the WTO's trade system.

The U.S. measures are suspected of violating WTO Agreement on Safeguards.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, Beijing wants to determine the legality of U.S. policies, as they harm China's rights and undermine the authority of the WTO.

Both the safeguard and the subsidies "have seriously damaged China's trade interests", said the spokesperson, before adding: "We urge the U.S. to take concrete actions, respect the rules of the WTO, and abandon the wrong practices so that the relevant trade can be restored to normal track". One day later, the WTO received a complaint filed by India against the United States. If those fail, the case moves to a panel of experts who can decide whether the trade controls are improper.

The two governments have raised tariffs on billions of dollars of each other's goods. China responded with similar penalties on American imports.

Another round of USA tariff hikes on $16 billion of Chinese goods is due to take effect August 23.
