  • New study finds glyphosate in kids' cereals and snack bars

The nonprofit Environmental Working Group tested 45 oat-based products like granolas and snack bars and found glyphosate in all but two, including organic products.

The highest levels were found in Quaker Old Fashioned Oats - 1,000 parts per billion (ppb) of glyphosate.

And just last week, a San Francisco jury awarded Dewayne Johnson $289 million in damages in a case against Monsanto after ruling that the company intentionally concealed the health risks of its Roundup products. "Parents should not have to wonder whether feeding their children these heathy foods will also expose them to a pesticide that increases the risk of cancer", EWG said in the report.

There was some evidence suggesting that people who used glyphosate in their jobs might have a higher rate of acute myeloid leukemia, but the numbers were too low to say for sure and the team said more study of that particular question would be needed. A full list of tested products and their glyphosate content is available as part of the study.

The Environmental Working Group commissioned independent laboratory tests for glyphosate, an herbicide linked to cancer, on more than a dozen brands of oat-based foods.

Quaker Oats products and Granola bars contain traces of chemical found in Round Up.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsanto's Roundup, an herbicide used to treat Roundup Ready corn and soy plants that have been genetically engineered to resist the chemical.

Vienna is world's most liveable city; New Delhi on 112, Mumbai 117
The Austrian capital beat Melbourne in Australia into first place - it's the first time a European city has topped the ranking. Perth ranked in 14th with a 95.9 per cent rating, while Brisbane failed to crack the top 20, placing 22nd at 94.3 per cent.

Almost three in four of the products exceeded what the EWG classes safe for children to consume.

The World Health Organization has classified glyphosate as a "probable human carcinogen", though the product's harm to humans is still being debated.

However, Naidenko, who was not an author of the report, believes that there are "conflicts of interest standing behind some" of the positive opinions of glyphosate and that Monsanto has tried to influence the EPA so that it will continue to allow use of the chemical in the United States. About one-third of 16 samples made with organically grown oats also had glyphosate, all at levels well below EWG's health benchmark. Along with that, on December 18, the company even posted on their website a statement by the EPA, "The draft human health risk assessment concludes that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans".

"Glyphosate does not belong in cereal". Simple Truth Organic Instant Oatmeal, for instance, didn't have the chemical in its oats.

If you or your children are eating Cheerios right now, there's a good chance that they're accompanied by a potentially harmful weed killer called Roundup. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for instance, has found that children between the ages of one and two have much higher exposure than older people. "Over those four decades, researchers have conducted more than 800 scientific studies and reviews that prove glyphosate is safe for use". The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has researched this issue and has set rules that we follow as do farmers who grow crops including wheat and oats.

Bayer shares registered yet another sharp decrease on Thursday (16 August), dropping as much as 6.5% in Frankfurt to hover near the 76 euros level as investors fear the German chemicals and pharmaceuticals giant may face numerous litigations in the U.S. after its controversial merger with Monsanto.
