Mike Huckabee: Sessions Needs to Take Control of Russia Probe or Resign

  • Former associate deputy U.S. attorney general Bruce Ohr arrives to testify behind closed doors before the House Judiciary and

But during his interview, Ohr told the committee Steele was referring to Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who has close ties to President Vladimir Putin and once employed Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, as a consultant.

President Trump and his supporters have pointed to the Ohrs as evidence that there was an improper connection between Hillary Clinton's opposition research and the Justice Department.

The lawyer, Bruce Ohr, also says he learned that a Trump campaign aide had met with higher-level Russian officials than the aide had acknowledged, the people said.

The letter was the latest salvo in a fight between the political parties as Republicans have criticized the propriety of the FBI's probe of ties between Moscow and Trump aides and whether they coordinated during the 2016 USA election campaign.

Steele and Ohr, at the time of the election a senior official in the deputy attorney general's office, had first met a decade earlier and bonded over a shared interest in worldwide organized crime.

In their letter, Cummings and Nadler, who are the ranking members of the Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees, write that Republicans on their committees were reading from the documents during Ohr's interview and using them to create a "highly misleading narrative with factually inaccurate interpretation and conjecture".

It is not clear from the report why Mr. Steele, who compiled and distributed the salacious anti-Trump dossier that started the Russian Federation probe, believed Russian Federation had the influence over Trump.

Republicans have charged that the Steele dossier, which contains some salacious and unverified intelligence on Trump and Russian Federation, was inappropriately used by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to obtain a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant on former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

They said he was being stripped of his associate deputy attorney post as part of a planned internal reshuffling, people familiar with Ohr's account told the AP.

Trump and some of his supporters in Congress have also accused the FBI of launching the entire Russian Federation counterintelligence investigation based on the dossier.

In a tweet Thursday, the president claimed Nellie is a Russian Federation expert who can fluently speak the language.

Ohr also told lawmakers and staff he didn't read any of his wife's work or the documents that were given to him from Steele, the source said.

The communications between Ohr and Steele were marked "law enforcement sensitive" because they related "to a confidential human source", the Democratic lawmakers said.

Ohr said he met in late 2017 with two senior Justice Department officials, Scott Schools and James Crowell, who told him they were unhappy he had not proactively disclosed his meetings with Steele.

"And if Jeff Sessions won't, he should step down and let someone do it".
