  • Five Excerpts from Bob Woodward’s New Book on the White House That Is Sure to Enrage Trump

His top economic adviser reportedly even "stole" letters from his desk to stop the president making dramatic changes in America's trade policy.

If there's one thing people have come to expect from a book by Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward, it's some stunning new revelation about the inner workings of a USA administration-something that typically sets the town buzzing for days.

Trump's aides feared the fallout could jeopardize a top-secret national security program: the ability to detect a North Korean missile launch within just seven seconds.Woodward reports Cohn was "appalled" that Trump might sign the letter.

Trump himself also railed against the people he appointed, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, the book states. "He's had a lot of credibility problems", Trump said of Woodward, who has reported on multiple presidents and alongside Carl Bernstein broke news of the Watergate scandal that ultimately led to President Richard Nixon's resignation.

"I assume that means it's going to be a negative book", the president replies.

He went on: "It's just nasty stuff. Maybe I wasn't given messages that he called".

"I'll just take the paper off his desk", Cohn, who has since quit the White House, said to his staffers.

A number of other officials from the president's staff - including Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, both of whom were specifically referenced in the book - have come out against it.

"He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything". We're in Crazytown. I don't even know why any of us are here.

Kavanaugh pledges to be 'team player' on Supreme Court

"I have not once ever heard the president talk about assassinating Assad", Haley told Al Jazeera correspondent James Bays.

Mr Mattis told Mr Trump he would "get right on it", but instead developed a plan for a limited air strike that did not threaten Mr Assad personally.

Mr Mattis is also quoted as saying Mr Trump had the understanding of "a fifth- or sixth-grader" - the age of 10 or 11 - in understanding foreign affairs.

"The idea I ever called the President an idiot is not true, in fact it's exactly the opposite", he said Tuesday.

She claimed in a statement: "While it is not always pretty, and rare that the press actually covers it, president Trump has broken through the bureaucratic process to deliver unprecedented successes for the American people. We're going to be much more measured".

When another aide drew up an order to withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada, Mr Cohn reportedly said: "I can stop this".

Mr Dowd is quoted as telling the president: "Don't testify". Got to protect the country."Cohn was not alone". He told Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross: "You're past your prime". But, according to Woodward, Trump was not finished.
