Sen. Rob Portman will be one of three people introducing Judge Kavanaugh later this afternoon (assuming the committee gets there).

More than 20 people have been arrested today for protesting the Supreme Court confirmation hearing of nominee Brett Kavanaugh in Washington D.C., and Piper Perabo was one of them. It is unlikely that many of them, too, would have reacted the same way had it been a man approaching a judge uninvited with a right-leaning political grievance. If all goes as Republicans plan, Kavanaugh could be on the bench when the court begins its new term on October 1.

"The Supreme Court must never be viewed as a partisan institution", Kavanaugh said in his opening statement Tuesday. They said the hearings should be delayed because they haven't had time to review the documents and not all documents have been released.

Monday night, the committee received 42,000 pages of documents about Kavanaugh's years with the Bush administration, prompting complaints from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

Grassley called the Democrats' request to halt the hearing "out of order" and accused them of obstruction. He pulled his hand back, turned his back to me and walked away.

He said he had attended the hearing in hopes of making Kavanaugh consider the consequences of his position on the second amendment.

Aged just 53, Kavanaugh would replace retired swing-vote Justice Anthony Kennedy in a lifetime appointment, a move that could solidify a hard-right court majority and help shape key aspects of American society for a generation or more.

Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley couldn't finish his first sentence before California Democrat Kamala Harris interrupted to demand a hearing delay.

At least six killed by Typhoon Jebi, Kansai International Airport flooded
The eye of the storm will be located around Osaka, however Japan's capital city of Tokyo will feel the brunt as Jebi rolls in. An airport spokeswoman said the airport did not know when it could resume operations.

Before Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh even had a chance to speak on the first day of his confirmation hearing process, the tone appeared to be set for the rest of the week. Republicans need just 50 votes - their entire conference at the moment - to clear Kavanaugh's nomination.

He called the Supreme Court "the last line of defense for the separation of powers (in the United States government), and the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution".

Other documents were released at the last minute, or not at all - including documents from 2003 to 2006 when Kavanaugh served as Bush's staff secretary.

"We have to confront an uncomfortable but important question about whether President Trump may have selected you, Judge Kavanaugh, with an eye towards protecting himself", said Sen. She said more than 90 percent of his records are being withheld from the Senate and the public.

"There's a 35-month black hole in your White House career where we've been denied access to any and all documents", Durbin said.

But within moments of Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley banging the gavel, Democrats launched what appeared to be coordinated protests against moving ahead with the hearing on Kavanaugh's lifetime appointment to the highest USA court.

Republican Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said earlier on Fox News that more documents on Kavanaugh have been released than on any other nominee.
