  • Burt Reynolds dies at the age of 82

The Georgia native, whose easy-going charms and handsome looks drew prominent roles in films such as "Smokey and the Bandit" and "Boogie Nights", suffered a cardiac arrest, Eisner said.

The actor was also a football player in his college days at Florida State, where he roomed with Lee Corso.

The film was a massive success, and earned $126 million at the box office, which today would equate to $508 million. His breakout film role was as Lewis Medlock in "Deliverance".

"I thought maybe this film is more important in a lot of ways than we've given it credit for", he said in an interview years later.

Reynolds had ambitions to play football professionally, but those hopes were dashed after the loss to N.C. State University on October 12, 1957, Reynolds said in a 2007 interview posted on YouTube. Blake Edwards cast him in the lead of the American remake of The Man Who Loved Women in 1983.

After the loss to N.C. State, Reynolds gave up the game and began his acting career.

He also appeared on the popular series "Gunsmoke" in the early '60s for 50 episodes as Quint Asper, the eventual Dodge City blacksmith.

We know we have a very strong vehicle , which was clearly demonstrated by the fact we monopolised the front row of the grid. By lap 11, Vettel was up into the points, and he would get as high as fourth before he would stop for a second time.

His profile got a bump in the early seventies when he posed naked on a bear skin rug for Cosmopolitan magazine, but his film breakthrough arose shortly after with Deliverance - another story of backwoods behaviour - in which Reynolds starred opposite Jon Voight. He also earned an Emmy in 1991 for the memorable role.

Smokey and the Bandit opened the same year Star Wars hit theaters.

Again, the star expressed regrets.

Just after the news broke, celebrity admirers and others took to social media to offer condolences and pay tribute to Reynolds. Reynolds had also been in relationships with Dinah Shore, Inger Stevens, Chris Evert, Judy Carne, Loni Anderson, and mentioned dating Hawn and Farrah Fawcett in his memoir.

His lone Oscar nomination came in 1998, in the best supporting actor category, for his portrayal of pornographic film producer Jack Horner in the film "Boogie Nights".

The longtime actor had been battling health problems over the past few years.
