George Papadopoulos became the first campaign aide to be sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation.

Twelve Russian intelligence officers were indicted by a federal grand jury on July 13, accused of hacking Democratic Party computer networks in 2016, in the most detailed US accusation yet that Moscow meddled in the presidential election to help Trump. According to the indictment, Papadopoulos was told by a Maltese professor in April 2016 that Russian officials had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

Papadopoulos was also sentenced to 13 months supervised released, 200 hours community service and a $9,500 fine. The judge in the case, Randolph Moss, said he wished to send a message about the seriousness of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

During his sentencing hearing Papadopoulos said his case should serve as a warning to others.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday afternoon, Trump distanced himself from Papadopoulos.

"The President of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever did", Breen said.

Federal sentencing guidelines under Papadopoulos's plea deal called for a penalty between probation and six months in prison.

Richard Pinedo, who was not involved with the Trump campaign, pleaded guilty in a case related to the Mueller probe in February to aiding and abetting interstate and foreign identity fraud by creating, buying and stealing hundreds of bank account numbers that he sold to individuals to use with large digital payment companies. "I made a awful mistake but I am a good man", he said.

Papadopoulos, one of the key players in the Russian Federation probe - or, as Trump described his role, a "coffee boy" - pled guilty late a year ago to lying to investigators.

Kavanaugh pledges to be 'team player' on Supreme Court
Rob Portman will be one of three people introducing Judge Kavanaugh later this afternoon (assuming the committee gets there). Grassley called the Democrats' request to halt the hearing "out of order" and accused them of obstruction.

Moss said that while Papadopoulos lied for selfish reasons and did real harm to the government's efforts to carry out its investigation of Russian meddling, he was moved by what he called the defendant's "genuine remorse about what he did".

In his time with the Trump campaign, the delicacy of Papadopoulos's mission to broker a meeting between Trump and Putin was not always reflected in his conduct.

Papadopoulos brought the idea up at a campaign meeting with Trump and future Attorney General Jeff Sessions, with Sessions later testifying before Congress that he had "pushed back" against the idea.

Papadopoulos also made a similar claim about Sessions last week in court. Overall, they say Papadopoulos did not provide "substantial assistance".

Asked if Papadopoulos still remained loyal to Trump, Breen smiled wryly and paused for a beat.

"We were hoping for no jail time but two weeks is OK", Maria Stamatopoulos said.

Van der Zwaan, a Dutch lawyer who worked with Manafort and Gates, was also convicted of lying to prosecutors.
