Serena Williams faces substantial fine after US Open final outburst

Depending on the person and the perspective, there were all sorts of ways of viewing and interpreting what went on between Serena Williams and chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the U.S. Open final.

Serena Williams was fined a total of $17,000 for three code violations during her loss to Naomi Osaka in the U.S. Open final.

The game penalty happened after Williams again demanded an apology from Ramos and then called him a "thief" saying that he "stole a point" from her with the previous penalty.

In the aftermath of the ugly incident, the tournament referee's office docked Williams £7,739 for "verbal abuse" of Ramos, £3,095 for being warned for coaching, and £2,321 for breaking her racket.

Williams, who was seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title on Saturday, vigorously disputed each of the violations during the match. Eventually, Willams called Ramos "a thief", drawing a third violation - and costing her a game.

"I know that everyone was cheering for her", Osaka told the crowd, "and I'm sorry it had to end like this".

"I can't sit here and say I wouldn't say he's a thief, because I thought he took a game from me", Williams said. You know, she just won.

"Your question is making me emotional", she told a reporter during the post-match press conference. It isn't and, as a result, a player was penalized for the actions of her coach.

"I couldn't eat anything, I felt like I was going to throw up. I have a daughter and I stand for what is right and I have never cheated".

This was not the way it was supposed to go for Williams, 36, perhaps the greatest player her sport has seen, on a night that was supposed to be a celebration of her career and her comeback to the top of tennis a year after giving birth.

Luis Enrique didn't want to reveal his side, although he said he knows what it will be, but did praise captain Sergio Ramos . The team did win the group by goal difference but it was surprised in the round of 16 by Russian Federation .

It was the second Grand Slam final defeat in a row for Williams, after Wimbledon in July, as she seeks an initial major title since returning to the tour after having a baby in 2017. While Williams was adamant that she never receives coaching, her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, acknowledged afterward that he did try to signal Williams, but didn't think she had seen him.

The Grand Slam Committee handed Williams a US$82,500 (S$113,200) fine and put her on two years' probation for an expletive-laced outburst at a line judge during her semi-final against Kim Clijsters.

"There are men out here that do a lot worse", she said, "but because I'm a woman, because I'm a woman, you're going to take this away from me?"

Williams whispered something to Osaka and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. I'm not sure if they were happy tears or they were just sad tears, because of the moment. Williams told them the whole episode "is not fair", and said: "This has happened to me too many times".

"I've said far worse", McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam singles victor, said on ESPN.

That remark triggered the code violation for verbal abuse, which is defined in the rule book as "a statement about an official, opponent, sponsor, spectator or other person that implies dishonesty or is derogatory, insulting or otherwise abusive".

Here's what the big-picture takeaway should be: Tennis needs a commissioner to oversee all aspects of the sport, someone to make sure there is consistency in the rules and the way they are applied.

Mouratoglou took to Twitter afterwards, hitting out at Ramos.

"It's weird in the women's game where they have coaching", said Barker.

Williams came to Osaka's defence after a controversial end to play in NY.
