Governor Andrew Cuomo has defeated challenger Cynthia Nixon in the NY gubernatorial Democratic primary. Dealing with state corruption was the only issue that likely Democratic primary voters saw Nixon doing a better job on than Cuomo in the September 10 Siena poll, 42-39 percent.

The former Sex and the City star became the talk of the Twittersphere yesterday, when a video emerged of her ordering a cinnamon raisin bagel with smoked salmon, red onions, capers, tomato and cream cheese at Zabar's - an order that offended bagel and lox purists.

Though a win by Cuomo, now vying for a third term leading the Empire State after being first elected in 2010, was widely expected, Nixon's combination of celebrity and progressive values forced the governor to wage a more earnest campaign that may have been expected by an incumbent in such a solidly Democratic state. While a Nixon victory appears very unlikely, last-minute controversies surrounding the opening of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge and a mailer to Jewish voters suggesting Nixon is anti-Semitic could haunt Cuomo and show that he is not without his own vulnerabilities. Nixon has two Jewish children and called the attack "sleazy".

The victor of the primary will face Republican Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins and former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, an independent, in the November general election. Cuomo has also called it a mistake.

'I want to thank all of the #TeamCynthia volunteers, supporters, and voters who dedicated their time to championing the progressive message of our campaign. BTW: My name is Cynthia, and I am going to be the next Governor of NY.

Cuomo also made Donald Trump a central figure in the campaign - portraying himself as the best person to stand up to the president.

Cynthia Nixon is sticking by her controversial bagel order.

But the actress-turned-activist isn't running to liberalize Cuomo ー she's running to replace him.

Such a strategy has been only intermittently successful during the 2018 election cycle, but most notably in NY in June, when 28-year-old Democratic-Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stunned Rep. Joe Crowley, the House of Representatives' fourth-ranking Democrat, in an upset in the 14th Congressional District primary.

Another closely watched race is the four-way Democratic contest for attorney general.

The charge is a familiar one among NY progressives, who fault Cuomo for the state's failure to pass its own DREAM Act, legislation to protect abortion rights and serious campaign finance revisions.
