Hurricane Florence Hits Near Wrightsville Beach

The White House said Friday U.S. President Donald Trump will travel to areas hit by Hurricane Florence next week, once it has been determined that his travel would not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts.

Hurricane Florence's came ashore at Wrightsville Beach, near Wilmington, N.C., at 7:15 a.m. ET on Friday with sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Salisbury, N.C. -based Food Lion on Friday said it has begun now accepting financial donations for Hurricane Florence relief at its 1,000 stores. As Florence raged, a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico brought heavy rain to already saturated areas along the Texas coast, resulting in street flooding and prompting some schools to cancel or cut short classes.

The National Hurricane Centre downgraded it to a tropical storm on Friday, but warned it would dump as much as 70 to 100 centimetres of rain on the coasts of North and SC.

As Hurricane Florence sidesteps Greater Williamsburg, many locals are wondering what to do with all their extra supplies.

"We aren't going to try to restore power for quite some time, probably", Outlaw, the mayor, said.

More than 1.7 million people in Virginia, North and SC were told to evacuate ahead of Florence's arrival.

The NHC predicted "catastrophic freshwater flooding" to hit "over portions of North and SC".
