Question Of The Week – “Omugwo”

“Omugwo” in Nigeria, is the tradition of having the mother of either the husband or the wife come over immediately after child birth to take care of both the woman and the baby for a little period of time.

The question is:

Ladies, would you rather your mother or your husband’s mother come for “omugwo”? And why?

  1. When it comes to Omugwo, there’s no one else entitled to come for it than the wife’s mother. This is especially important when it’s the first child as the wife may need some brushing up to do in terms of baby care. It is the wife’s mother that will understand her daughter’s weaknesses well and alleviate the situation appropriately.

In my opinion, the only reason for the husband’s mother to come for omugwo is if the wife’s mother is late. Even at that, a mother figure in form of wife’s aunt or elder sister can also come for omugwo.

      1. In a situation where you are my wife, and our mothers are alive then when the 1st child is delivered, you’d decide if your mother comes or my mother. At least, to keep you happy is more important in any bonding pattern.
